One Smart Fish written by Laura Manivong is part of the Rookie Reader series. As helpfully labeled on the book's cover, it is written in rhyme. Kids will likely find it hilarious. This little girl, possibly about 6-8, goes fishing with her grandfather and comes up with all these neat (read: gross) ideas on what will make good bait. She tries hot dogs, cookie dough, and even spaghetti. Each time the smiling fish outsmarts her. I enjoyed the story and the colorful illustrations (watercolors, I think) are appealing to the eye. One thing that stood out to me is that the young girl is noticeably pear-shaped. It's more than kid fat as her arms and legs are skinny. Possibly intended just to make the characters look funny and therefore interesting. To me it was strange, but it doesn't detract from the story. A cute read! Recommended for ages 5-7.
